Holistic or biological dentistry is an approach where we consider how a patient’s oral health can impact his or her overall health.
At Bloom Holistic Dental, we believe that oral health is connected to systemic health, as well as energetic and mental health. As a biological dentist, I aim to use biocompatible materials, avoid toxins, and avoid procedures that can have negative downstream effects on other parts of the body.

The Missing Link between
Oral and Systemic Health

It has been scientifically-proven that there is an oral-systemic connection between oral health and bodily health. The human body is complex and everything is interconnected. The body is a system of energy and has various biological processes that all interact with one another. When one area of the body, or one system of the body, is out of balance, this will cause imbalances elsewhere in the body and can impact your overall health.

For example, Gum Disease has been linked to an increased risk of developing Diabetes, Heart Disease, Alzheimers, and complications in pregnancy, such as low birth weight. Infection in the mouth can often spread to other parts of the body and cause more infection or other systemic effects.

A biological dentist or a holistic dentist will look at what “silent” infections may be present in the mouth that most conventional dentists are unaware of or do not believe to be an issue. These “silent” infections are most often asymptomatic and include things such as root canals (dead teeth), cavitations (dead, necrotic bone often resulting from improper extractions of teeth), infected tonsils, and infected gum tissue.

Conventional Dentistry
vs.
Holistic Dentistry

A conventional dentist only looks at how to best “fix” a tooth so that it can be used to chew food, they do not take into account how a patient’s oral health impacts other organ systems in the body.

A conventional dentist will also blame any oral dysbiosis or cavities on a patient’s oral hygiene or diet (both of which are important, but are not the only factors).

A holistic dentist (or a biological dentist) will look at how a person’s oral health impacts the rest of his or her body. This includes how oral health and dental materials can impact the immune system, lymphatic system, cardiac system, respiratory system, sinuses, brain, the amount of inflammation present in the body, etc.

A holistic dentist also will look to get to the root cause of a patient’s issues and will address all factors that may be contributing.
A holistic dentist will assess a patient’s oral microbiome, airway, oral pH, diet, vitamin and mineral levels, the levels of heavy metal present in the body, and a patient’s daily habits and oral hygiene.
