Why Snoring, Sleep Apnea, and Clenching/ Grinding Occurs

During sleep, all of our muscles, joints, tendons, ligaments, and tissues relax.

The oral tissues also relax and can cause partial or full airway obstruction, thereby impairing our ability to breath at night. This obstruction will occur if a person’s jaw is too small, a person’s tissues are enlarged, or a combination of the two.

When this obstruction occurs, your oxygen levels will drop. In response to decreased oxygen levels, the brain will send a signal to the jaw to move around, causing the clenching and grinding of the jaw and teeth. This is done in the hopes of moving the lower into a forward position, which will help enlarge and open the airway, allowing more oxygen to enter the system.

The major reason most patients clench and grind at night is because of decreased oxygen levels during sleep, which is seen in sleep disordered breathing and sleep apnea.

The DEKA QuietNite Laser is a CO2 laser that helps encourage collagen production in tissues. This increased collagen production helps tighten any flaccid or enlarged tissues.

Once the oral tissues have tightened, there is now more airway space so that patient can breath better and get more oxygen during sleep.

The tightening of tissues also decreases the incidence of snoring.
